Given below is how you can use ADB sideload in Android. The process will be divided into two steps which involve using Stock recovery and TWRP recovery.

We will be discussing how you can use ADB sideload using stock recovery and TWRP recovery.

Before continuing, ensure you have the backup of your device, and that your device is charged to 80% or more.

How To Use ADB sideload Using Stock Recovery

Many people use ADB sideload in stock recovery for installing OTA updates. To use ADB sideload using Stock recovery, follow the steps given below-

  • Firstly you will have to install ADB tools on your PC. You can download the ADB and fastboot tools for your PC from this website.
  • Download and extract the file on your PC, and ensure you keep the folder on your PC.
  • The next thing that you can do is enable USB debugging, and that can be done from the developer options, and you will have to enable them first.
  • To do so, head to the settings of your phone, and then head to the about phone section. Now in the about phone section, tap on build number a few times until you see the notification ‘You are now a developer’ at the bottom of your screen.
  • Now head back to the settings menu, and then search for developer options and open it. Now in the developer options search for USB debugging toggle and enable it on your PC.
  • Also, enable the OEM unlocking toggle that you will find in the developer options.
  • Next, you will have to download the update for the stock ROM. You will find the update from the website of the stock ROM your device has.
  • Ensure you download the update for your device.
  • Connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable.
  • Head to the platform-tools folder, and then type CMD in the address bar, and hit enter to launch the command prompt.
  • Enter the command adb reboot recovery in the command prompt and execute it. This will boot your phone into recovery mode.
  • Once your phone is in stock recovery, select the option ‘Apply update from ADB.’ You can navigate to the option using volume keys and then select it using the power button.
  • Now in the command prompt window type, the command adb sideload update.zip and hit enter. Do note that upload.zip will be replaced by the actual name of the update file that you have downloaded.
  • Once the process is completed, reboot the system. After the completion of the process, you will see the Reboot system now option.
  • Navigate to the option using volume keys and select it using the power button. You will be rebooted to your system with the update installed on your PC.

How To Use ADB sideload Using TWRP Recovery

To use ADB sideload function using TWRP recovery, follow the steps given below-

Unlocking Your Phone

  • Firstly, ensure you have turned on OEM unlocking and USB debugging on your device. To enable them, open the setting app on your phone.
  • Now in the settings app, head to the About phone section, and tap on build number a few times until you see the notification ‘You are now a developer’ at the bottom of your screen.
  • Head back to the main menu of the settings, and search for developer options. There you will find OEM unlocking and USB debugging toggle. Turn them on.
  • Next, install ADB and fastboot tools on your PC. You can download the tool from this link. Download and install the ADB and fastboot tools on your PC.
  • Also, download the TWRP file for your device from the official repository. Copy the .img file of the TWRP to the folder where ADB and fastboot tools is installed.
  • Also, transfer the TWRP file to the internal storage of your phone and remember its location.
  • Now boot your phone into fastboot. To do so, power off your phone, and then press Volume Down + Power Button combo for a few seconds to boot your phone into fastboot mode.
  • Now head to the platform-tools folder. In the address bar, type CMD and hit enter. This will open the command prompt.
  • In the command prompt, type the command fastboot devices and execute it. This will ensure whether your device is recognized or not.
  • Now type the command fastboot OEM unlock in the command prompt and hit enter to unlock the bootloader of your device.
  • Now type the command fastboot reboot to reboot your phone normally. This will reboot your phone with an unlocked bootloader.

Installing TWRP

  • Next, type in the command adb reboot bootloader in the command prompt, and execute it.
  • Now, enter the command fastboot boot twrp.img in the command prompt and execute it. You will have to replace the twrp.img with the actual name of the TWRP file.
  • You will be booted to TWRP recovery mode.
  • Now in the recovery mode, tap on install and then on images. Now select the TWRP file from the location you copied it to.
  • Next click on the recovery option that you will find under the select partition to flash image. Confirm the flash.
  • Once the recovery image is flashed, you will see a message IMAGE FLASH COMPLETED. This will successfully install the TWRP recovery image on your phone. You can now reboot your phone.

Using ADB Sideload Function

  • Ensure your PC and your phone are connected via the USB cable.
  • Type the command adb reboot recovery in the command prompt to reboot your phone into recovery mode. If you have closed the command prompt, then you can open it again, by visiting the platform-tools folder and then typing CMD in the address bar and hitting the enter.
  • Transfer the update file to the platform-tools folder.
  • Now in TWRP mode, select the advanced option and then select ADB sideload option.
  • Then swipe the toggle saying Swipe to start sideload.
  • Next in the command prompt, type adb sideload update.zip and execute it. Note that update.zip is the name of the file that you want to install. Replace it with the appropriate file name.
  • Once the process is completed, reboot the device.
