Method 1: Lock or Unlock the Fn key via BIOS or UEFI Settings

You can lock or unlock the Fn key on your keyboard from your BIOS as well as UEFI settings. We will mention both the methods in this guide down below.

To lock or unlock the Fn key from BIOS, follow the steps mentioned below:

  • You need to enter the BIOS settings on Startup so you first need to identify the key which takes you there.
  • On some PCs, we have seen that the F2 key works. On others, F10 key is used and some PCs use the Del, F1 or F2 key so it will take a few attempts.
  • Switch on your PC and while it is still booting, press any of the keys mentioned above and see which one works in letting you enter BIOS.
  • Repeat the process until you enter BIOS.
  • Use the left or right arrow keys to enter the System Configuration menu.

  • Using the down arrow keys, enter the Action Keys Mode option and enable or disable the Fn key from here.
  • If you enable the Actions Keys Mode then you don’t need to press the Fn key while accessing F1-F12 keys. On the other hand, disabling this function will need you to press Fn key while pressing F1-F12 keys

  • Select Update & Security and click on Recovery. Under the Advanced Startup option on the right side, click on Restart Now.
  • On the next screen, select Troubleshoot options > Advanced Options > UEFI Settings.
  • Click on the Restart button and your Laptop or PC will restart and take you to BIOS where you can lock or unlock the Fn key.
  • Repeat the steps as we mentioned in the method to lock or unlock Fn key using BIOS method and you will be able to do it.

Method 2: Use keyboard Settings to Lock or Unlock the Fn key

Now, this one is a little tricky because we have seen that many keyboards don’t have the Fn Lock key so this method will not work for those who don’t have the Fn Lock key.

For those who have the Fn Lock key which will be either on the Esc key or somewhere else denoted by a lock symbol.

Use the following key combination to lock or unlock the Fn key using your keyboard:

  • Ctrl + Shift + Num
  • Num
  • Fn + Num
  • Num + F11
  • Fn + F11

You can also replace the Num key with Insert (Ins) key if you don’t have a Num key on your keyboard.
